The Pleural Plaques Compensation Scheme 2014

Pleural plaques on their own don’t produce harmful or painful symptoms but can increase the risk of the sufferer developing Mesothelioma. This is a rare and dangerous form of cancer affecting the tissue linings of organs, most notably the lungs.

The Pleural Plaques Compensation scheme was established by the Ministry of Justice but is now closed because the House of Lords ruled asymptomatic pleural plaques as not being able to constitute for compensation. However, people in Scotland and Northern Ireland can still claim for a one-off compensation payout without having symptoms from pleural plaques.

There is a compensation scheme in place for those who suffer with symptomatic pleural plaques in England and Wales, although it is worth noting that pleural plaques are usually symptomless.

Pleural Plaques Symptoms

The symptoms of pleural plaques can be mild, usually nothing beyond minor breathlessness and sometimes calcification of the scar tissue. Calcified pleural plaques do not present a major problem to the patient but in some cases the pleural thickening can be extreme enough to cause irritation of the lung linings, resulting in pleural effusion.

Time Limits

Typically, compensation claims must be made within three years of the symptoms becoming apparent or within three years of your diagnosis. If you know you have been exposed to asbestos in the past then it is important to get a health check from your doctor to determine any emerging problems.
